Maserati EVs on Track for 2024 Launch after gaining EPA approval

Maserati has received a green light from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to launch its upcoming Grancabrio and Granturismo electric vehicles this year. The Italian luxury automaker gained Certificates of Conformity (CoCs) from the EPA earlier this month for the two EVs, showing it is on track to deliver the models in 2024 as recently promised after previous delays.

Long Road to Production

Maserati first unveiled prototypes of the Grancabrio and Granturismo EVs, named Folgore, back in 2021. At that time, the company aimed to have the vehicles delivered to customers by 2023. However, delays subsequently pushed expected deliveries back to 2024. After confirming last year the EVs would not arrive in 2023 as planned, Maserati stated in January 2024 that it now intends to launch the Grancabrio Folgore this year.

EPA Approval Paves Way for 2024 Launch

The EPA’s granting of CoCs to Maserati earlier this month for the Grancabrio and Granturismo Folgore models indicates the automaker has cleared a key hurdle for releasing the EVs in the United States this year. The CoCs officially allow the vehicles to enter the U.S. market. The approvals come after Maserati applied for the certificates in late January, showing it is pushing forward with preparations to make good on its recent promise of getting the EVs to customers in 2024.

Central to Electrification Plans

The Folgore variants of the Grancabrio and Granturismo are important pieces of Maserati’s broader shift to electrification. The company’s parent, Stellantis, has set ambitious electrification targets under its “Dare Forward 2030” campaign. As Maserati works to transition its lineup, the automaker also plans to launch an electric version of its MC20 supercar in 2025, followed by a new electric SUV in 2027 and an electric Quattroporte sedan in 2028. The EPA approvals put Maserati’s initial EV offerings on track for this year, representing a key milestone as the company aims to establish itself as a maker of high-end electric vehicles.
