The Ferrari 812 Superfast was introduced in 2017 with a 6.5L (F140 GA) V12 engine deriving from the minuscule 6.3-litre engine used in its predecessor – the Ferrari F12 Berlinetta.
According to Ferrari in 2018, the 812 Superfast’s engine was the most powerful naturally aspirated production car engine ever made. It was the first Ferrari to have Electronic Power Steering (EPS) and shares the rear-wheel steering system known as the Virtual Short Wheelbase, borrowed from the limited-edition Ferrari F12 TDF. The 6.5-litre engine works with a seven-speed, dual-clutch transmission which Ferrari has reworked to provide 30 percent quicker upshifts and 40 percent faster downshifts, this helps to catapult the 812 Superfast from 0-60mph in less than 3 seconds!
The aerodynamic features have also been improved over the F12 with the front end designed to increase downforce and duct air being swallowed by the sculpted intakes towards the brakes to help keep them cool. The side of the vehicle was designed to decrease drag and increase airflow and the rear has been constructed with flaps to open at high speeds to further increase downforce. All improvements have contributed to a small increase in horsepower but a large increase in handling performance which is helped further by a Ferrari diet keeping it 150 pounds lighter than the F12 Berlinetta.
The alphanumeric names which Ferrari has been giving its automobiles have become a trend we all love and all of which have deeper meanings. With the 812 Superfast, it’s no different – the 8 relates to the car’s engine output of 800 “cavalli vapore”, which translates to horsepower, 12 indicates the number of cylinders it boasts and the word Superfast means exactly what it says on the tin, the car is super-fast! This is not the first time Ferrari has used the ‘Superfast’ name and other models including the 1956 Ferrari 410 Superfast and the Ferrari 500 Superfast, produced between 1964 and 1966, all hail the name and were also V12 powered.
In late 2019, Ferrari unveiled the Ferrari 812 GTS as the open top version of the 812 Superfast. Previous convertible variants of the 550, 575 and 599 were limited edition models and only meant for special customers, making the Ferrari 812 GTS the first front-engine V12 series production convertible model offered by Ferrari in 50 years. Like the F8 Spider, the roof is a folding metal item which goes up or down in 14 seconds and will operate on the move at speeds below 30mph. The GTS weighs 75 kg more than the Superfast due to chassis reinforcing components but still maintains equal performance where the car has been aerodynamically refined to eliminate any turbulence from the loss of a fixed roof.
